Things to See #01 Florence is about an hour's drive north. It is worth considering going by bus from Greve-in-Chianti as there frequent buses which terminate in the city centre within a few minutes walk of all the main attractions; the Duomo and Baptistry, the Uffitzi Gallery, the Piazza della Signoria, the Ponte Vecchio and the daily market.

Things to See #02Siena is about one hour's drive south and the main attractions are the Piazza del Campo and the unfinished Duomo. The main car park is by the football stadium from which a short pleasant walk brings you to the Piazza. For those holidaying over the two Palio horse-race days, July 2nd and August 16th, it is worth attending, even if you do not stay for the race, to watch the parades of the teams and soak up the atmosphere.

Things to See #03San Gimignano about 2 hours' drive is famous as the City of Towers. There were orginally 39, built by rich noble families to impress and indicate their wealth. Unfortunately the ravages of time have reduced these to only 13. It is still an unforgettable moment when you first sight this "Mini Manhattan" perched on a distant hilltop.

Things to See #04Monteriggione - on the way to Siena a walled fortified village beside the autostrada - about 1/2 hour's drive. From the photo it seems that, looking through the archway, there is nothing inside the walls. Do not be deceived there is a thriving village inside the walls with houses a Piazza and some excellent restaurants.

Other destinations

Colle val d'Elsa - another interesting town on the way to San Gimignano.

Pisa - the Leaning Tower and Duomo-about 2 hours' drive.

Volterra - a very old town with Etruscan ruins - about 2 hours' drive.

Lucca - about 2hours' drive, is famous for its magnificent renaissance walls and wealth of old churches. Also the birthplace of Puccini whose house is now the "Puccini Museum".

Further afield

Cortona - a fascinating old town built on a steep hillside with narrow winding streets on the Tuscany/Umbria border - about 2hours' drive.

Arrezzo - a large commercial town with an attractive mediaeval centre and a serious main shopping street - about 2 1/2 hours' drive.
